Cyril of Turov

He was born around 1130 in the city of Turov , capital of a powerful principality, the city with developed culture (the oldest hand-written manuscript of Belarus the Turov Gospels of XII century was kept there).

Being a son of rich parents, Cyril nevertheless did not strive for "the fame of the world of decay", but was fond of sciences. His aspiration to understand the wisdom of Holy scripts led him to the monastery, where he shut up in a tower at the bank of the Pripyat’ river and worked on creation of sermons. "Words" by Cyril of Turov – prayers and legends – are devoted to Christian holidays and philosophical topics; his talent gained him fame of the second golden mouthed.

The name of the monk Cyril became famous because of his education, eloquence, and righteous life; he was considered to be saint. In 1161 Turov veche (city assembly) and prince Juri elected Cyril to be a bishop.

He died around 1190.

In 1993 they opened a monument to Cyril of Turov at the Castle hill in the city of Turov.
