Belovezhskaya Puscha

Location: Brest region

Obviously the name of the forest originates from the colour of the defense tower (“vezha”).built in the 13th century in Kamenets.

Belovezhskaya virgin forest territory is 145 thousands of hectares. It is a large forest tract, situated at the territory of Kamenets, Pruzhany and Svislotch areas, along the state border, at the watershed of the rivers Neman, Western Bug and Pripyat’ basins. Belovezhskaya virgin forest is partly situated at the territory of Poland (about 57 thousands of hectares). December 25, 1939 this territory was proclaimed to be a national part.

At the territory of Belovezhskaya virgin forest there are about 844 species of high vascular plants, 220 species of mosses, 260 species of lichens, 159 species, 11 sorts and 31 forms of mushrooms, there are about 58 species of bushes and semi-bushes..
